USPack Accelerates Same-Day Deliveries for a Nationwide Retail Logistics Partner through Postal Infusion

Overview

A nationally recognized parcel sortation provider prides themselves on accurate and fast sorting for postal infusion. And while their zip code sorting services set the bar for the retail industry—where speedy delivery is an expectation—all their good work was undermined by late deliveries to the post offices.

The problem: comingled freight on courier trucks from their sorting facilities to local post offices meant loss of control over pickup and delivery times. So, even though the parcels were sorted on time, they often didn’t get to post offices by 7 AM for same-day insertion—a particularly acute problem during high-volume periods like peak season. 

USPack solved the 7 AM delivery dilemma with dedicated trucks that only carry the sorter’s parcels and only service their routes, ensuring on-time delivery to post offices.

Challenge

In today’s fast-paced ecommerce landscape, retail consumers expect same-day delivery on everything from sweaters to vacuums.

A key success metric for this prominent parcel sorting provider is being able to sort parcels by zip code from their national and overseas retail customers—which typically arrive by the truck and plane load—into bar-coded sacks and have them delivered to post offices by 7 AM for same day postal infusion.

By arriving at post offices at the crack of dawn, the parcels can be put into carrier routes and delivered to buyers’ doorsteps that same day.  

However, in juggling final mile demands from multiple customers on each truck, the sorter’s current courier services repeatedly failed to get to post offices on time. As the problem became more severe, the sorter was under pressure and risked damaging its relationships with its retailer customers. The question was how to get this white glove courier treatment at an attractive price.  

Solution

USPack developed a custom, dedicated courier system that puts the sorter in total control. We tapped into the sorter’s proprietary data, as well as our own, to design an optimized route structure. Once the sorter signed off on the routes, we sourced dedicated drivers who arrive at our USPack terminal between 2 and 3 AM; are deployed within a 50 to 75, and sometimes 100-mile, radius of the terminal; and drive to up to 10 post offices each. The routes are designed to arrive at the highest volume post offices first (usually in urban areas) and then move outward. 

Each driver is trained to scan sack barcodes at both pickup and delivery so that USPack and the sorter have real-time performance data, all easily accessible from USPack’s data analytics platform.  

At every step, our local- and national-level operations and account managers work with the sorter’s management to meet the main goal: getting the right package to the right post office on time for insertion. During peak season, this collaboration can mean getting forecasts from the sorter for expected volume by post office to determine whether to bring on more trucks, how many and where, or whether to have drivers do double routes.  

Results

USPack met the sorter’s needs with a data-driven, tailored solution that delivered promised service levels. Following a successful peak season with USPack’s final mile solution for 70 Chicago post offices and large areas of Connecticut, the parcel sortation provider eagerly tapped us to expand to Boston and metro areas of Wisconsin.
